Industry leading civil engineering contractor BAM Nuttall has been utilising the PID Systems Armadillo security system to provide enhanced security for a number of its rail projects in the West of England and Wales.

The ‘Armadillo’ security systems, which are designed, manufactured and supplied by Monkton-based, Perimeter Intruder Detection Systems Ltd, consist of modular armoured, wireless battery powered detection units with built in cameras which operate over 3G-4G and mobile phone networks. In the event of a site intrusion, the system immediately alerts PID-Systems control room operatives, who would then contact key stakeholders and emergency services if required.

Traditionally on civil engineering projects, security is provided by manned guards or hard wired electronic security systems which are reliant on the provision of a site power supply. PID Systems standalone security systems will now allow BAM Nuttall’s sites to be safely protected without having to have a full time security guard within the perimeter. Generators will also not have to be run overnight and at weekends, therefore reducing BAM Nuttall’s carbon footprint.

Operations Manager at BAM Nuttall’s Rail Division, Huw Jones commented “We were looking for an innovative, cost effective solution to provide site security on numerous rail projects in the west of England and Wales. We were very impressed with the simplicity and versatility of the systems developed by PID which are standalone and do not require any re-routing of wiring or moving as project progresses.

“PID Systems provides a useful security solution for temporary and semi-permanent assignments, our advanced products allows PID control room staff and designated key holders to see what is happening on their site in real time,” says Janis Brazier, Marketing Manager at PID Systems. “If there is a serious crime we would obviously alert the police immediately, but you would be surprised how quickly intruders leave the site once the system’s remotely activated 105db voice warning alerts and security lighting is activated!
