dormakaba has unveiled its latest ATM security innovation with the release of the Apexx Strato™ Rotary lock. This keyless electronic rotary lock is specifically designed to safeguard the ATM top hatch, a critical access point that is often targeted in attacks involving malware installation and jackpotting. The introduction of this technology seeks to minimise unauthorised access and protect financial institutions worldwide.

The Apexx Strato utilises Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) capabilities to secure ATMs, replacing traditional shared mechanical keys with controlled mobile credentials and automatic audit capabilities. This shift not only reduces financial risks but also improves transparency and fortifies security across ATM networks.

Senior Vice President and General Manager Bruce Kayal highlighted the drive behind this development, stating, “Our team has launched several new solutions over the past three years focused on driving continued operational efficiencies and risk management for financial institutions, retailers, ATM owners and operators, and cash-in-transit (CIT) service providers.” Kayal emphasised that Apexx Strato is a valuable addition to existing safety solutions, enhancing protection for both physical and service personnel assets.

Recent trends indicate that legacy key-based security systems are increasingly susceptible to organised ATM attacks. Data from the ATM Industry Association points out that 70% of ATM crimes in the U.S. involve jackpotting and cash-out schemes. The Apexx Strato system tackles this issue by eradicating the use of traditional keys and implementing centralised credential management for service access.

As Kayal noted, “You can’t steal or copy a key that no longer exists.” This development means that teams responsible for ATM security can manage risks more efficiently, providing increased control and visibility, which translates to greater peace of mind for those involved.
