Hikvision AIoT enhances safety at Benghazi children’s hospital

Following extensive renovations, the Benghazi Children’s Hospital in Libya is poised to offer a safer and more integrated healthcare experience. The facility has implemented Hikvision’s AIoT (AI-powered Internet of Things) technologies to enhance patient care, streamline communication, bolster medical education, and boost operational efficiency.

Having served local communities for over 40 years, the Benghazi Children’s Hospital occupies an area of approximately 11,300 m², providing diverse inpatient and outpatient services. The recent refurbishment marks the first major update in four decades, aimed at improving the hospital environment by setting ambitious targets, including an 80% enhancement in patient satisfaction, response times, and interdepartmental communication.

In order to achieve these ambitious goals, the hospital has collaborated with national distributor Al Motaheda to implement an integrated Hikvision smart healthcare solution. This includes systems for patient communication, medical education, and fire protection.

Recognising the critical nature of response times in healthcare, Hikvision’s Nurse Call System has been deployed in the hospital’s Observation and Gastroenteritis Departments.
Equipped with 11 Doorway Terminals and LED indicators at the ward entrances, this setup ensures immediate assistance to patients by displaying room and bed information in corridors. The Nurse Station, positioned between the two departments, enhances operational efficiency. It allows staff to receive and prioritise calls from all wards, ensuring that patients receive appropriate attention promptly.

To boost communication across departments, the hospital has installed 40 SIP Phones in examination rooms, operating rooms, labs, and offices, fostering day-to-day coordination. Additionally, 37 Ceiling Speakers have been set up to deliver announcements, visitor guidance, and emergency alerts, while 26 Ceiling Access Points ensure robust hospital-wide wireless connectivity, supporting staff communication and connected devices.

These technological improvements aim to create a seamless healthcare environment, ensuring crucial information reaches the right individuals promptly. Hospital leadership anticipates that these solutions will significantly enhance patient satisfaction and reduce response times.

As a teaching facility, the Benghazi Children’s Hospital places considerable importance on clinical education. Space constraints in operating rooms often limit student observation opportunities. To overcome this, the hospital has introduced a Live Surgery Broadcasting System with the Hikvision Video Cart. This mobile unit, usable across four operating rooms, allows high-quality video transmissions to a dedicated training hall, providing students with learning opportunities without disrupting clinical operations.

With patient consent, surgeries can be recorded and stored, forming a valuable educational resource for future medical training, expanding students’ practical clinical learning experiences.

Enhanced safety measures include a comprehensive Hikvision fire protection system, offering early fire detection and rapid alert distribution. This setup includes 203 Smoke Detectors and 24 Audible and Visual Alarms, with Manual Call Points strategically located at corridor ends and near exits. A Fire Alarm Control Panel at the main reception ensures centralised control, with a microphone for live evacuation instructions if needed.

The integrated systems facilitate prompt emergency response, supporting a secure environment for patients and staff. Although the hospital is yet to formally open post-renovation, feedback from management and medical staff has been overwhelmingly positive. As stated by Project Manager Taha Grgom, “The nurse call system will help us respond to patients more quickly, while the live surgery broadcasting system will open new possibilities for medical education. Together, these technologies are helping us build a more connected and efficient hospital.”

With its upcoming reopening, the Benghazi Children’s Hospital exemplifies how AIoT technologies can enhance healthcare delivery, collaboration, safety, and medical education, illustrating technology’s role in improving outcomes and ensuring quality care for children.
