Terminal Aeroportuaria de Guayaquil S.A, TAGSA, which manages the José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in the city of Guayaquil, has chosen Motorola Solutions’ Avigilon Unity video security and access control solution to support safer, more efficient operations.

The AI-powered, on-premise security suite simplifies the administration of video and access control across multiple sites and allows security personnel to more easily share video clips to improve awareness and collaboration.

With its 180 hectares of area and an average of 4 million passengers annually, Guayaquil’s airport plays a crucial role as an international air traffic terminal connecting Ecuador with more than 15 international destinations. Avigilon Unity was chosen to help mitigate security threats common to international airports across the world, from petty theft and robbery to organised crime and terrorism.

“Technology is vitally important to maintaining the high service standards that have always characterised Guayaquil’s airport and to keeping our passengers, staff and air operations safe,” said Ángel Córdova, general manager at TAGSA. “With our new video and access control management solution, we have been able to extend security to areas that were not previously covered while adding capabilities that allow our security staff to make more informed and efficient decisions.”

Motorola Solutions’ Avigilon security cameras have been strategically installed across the airport to provide security personnel with eyes on critical locations. Video analytics can detect and notify personnel of anomalies that could signal unusual crowd activity, unauthorised access into restricted areas and other security threats such as unattended luggage.

Across expansive areas of the airport, thermal cameras have also been installed to improve nighttime visibility. These high-performance cameras can cover vast areas, detect unusual movements and locate possible intruders in restricted areas based on their heat signatures. This has significantly strengthened security and detection capabilities in critical areas with low lighting.

“With Avigilon Unity, security staff at the Guayaquil Airport can more quickly and efficiently search and analyse live and recorded video,” said Ulises Gomez, MSSSI vice president and director sales, Video Security & Access Control for Motorola Solutions Latin America. “This allows them to better detect, respond and investigate incidents as they are unfolding, increasing safety and security across the airport terminal and operations.”
