Xtract One Technologies has been chosen by Nova Scotia Health to enhance security across its facilities using the SmartGateway system, known for its AI-driven weapons detection capabilities. An initial deployment involves 25 systems aimed at improving safety for patients, visitors, and staff. The partnership with Nova Scotia Health comes as part of efforts to modernise security protocols in collaboration with the nurses’ union.

The introduction of advanced technologies like SmartGateway plays a crucial role in achieving a protected hospital environment, significantly limiting the entry of dangerous items.

Xtract One was selected following SmartGateway’s successful 12-day trial in Truro, Nova Scotia, where the system scanned 7,400 individuals and detected 49 prohibited items, including knives and box cutters. Its ability to accurately identify such items remains a top priority for the healthcare provider.

Peter Evans, CEO of Xtract One, noted the persistent challenge of violence against healthcare workers, emphasising the importance of SmartGateway in setting a protective standard for frontline staff.

“This installation marks another key step in our expanding work with Canadian healthcare organisations,” Evans remarked, pointing out earlier deployments in Manitoba and the technology’s role in proactive security measures.

Dean Stienburg, Director of Security for Nova Scotia Health, discussed the broader security strategies, stating, “Our goal is to deliver first class healthcare, and ensuring the safety of all who enter our facilities is a critical step in providing that service.”

He expressed confidence in SmartGateway’s ability to advance security efforts, having been impressed with the system’s trial performance. SmartGateway offers swift and private security screening through AI-powered sensors designed to discreetly detect weapons and contraband.

The system moves beyond traditional metal detectors, improving both safety outcomes and the user experience by maintaining privacy and ensuring a smooth flow through checkpoints, thus replacing the need for removing personal items.
